SOCIAL STUDIES HOME

The Social Studies Department at Berkmar High School seeks to build student capacity regarding discipline knowledge, thinking and literacy skills, democratic values, and citizen participation. Stretching students to reach their highest potential through consistently high expectations and pervasive collaboration is the ultimate goal of every teacher in the department. Through the use of technology and research-based pedagogy, the teachers in this department seek to help students understand how people, cultures, business, and the environment have interacted in the past, currently interact, and could interact in the future. We believe this knowledge is essential to prepare our students to be active citizens in a democratic society. While many of the teachers in the department are involved in extra-curricular activities, the focus is always on student learning. At the end of their high school career, students should leave Berkmar with an understanding of the forces that shape our global society, the literacy and thinking skills necessary for post-secondary success, and an awareness of the opportunities and duties they have as members of a democratic republic.
